After a 6 hour flight to London and a 2 hour flight to Nice, we finally made it to Antibes around 4pm (local time) on May 17, 2011. When we got here, we unpacked for a little while and then had dinner at a local Italian restaurant which was absolutely delicous. Since we are so close to Italy, almost all the local restaurants are Italian. During dinner, I started to feel the effects of let lag--headache, fatigue, racing heart, dehydration, and even a slight fever. After dinner, I calculated that I had been up for about 30 hours, so I decided to go straight to bed. Even after a solid 9 hours of sleep, I woke up still not feeling great. I was still shaky and very dehydrated.
We had breakfast at 8:30am which consisted of regular croissants and chocolate croissants and orange juice. It was delicious! After breakfast we took a brief tour around Antibes. We went to a huge cement wall that goes along the coast and the port. We then walked into town and we were shown where the market, grocery store, bank, bus, and train stations were. After we got back, my roommates and I went to the grocery store and did some shopping for our apartment which was much harder than I expected. First, we got lost going to the grocery store so it took about 30 minutes as opposed to 5 minutes. Then, we were stopped by an old french man while we were walking and he said that if we are in France we need to speak French, not English. Once we got to the grocery store, I had the problem of figuring out which butter to buy and which milk was most like non-fat American milk. Everything is so different here and not being able to speak French is a big handicap. When we finally finished shoving our groceries into our book bags, we headed back to the apartment. As soon as we got back, I took a nap for about an hour and a half. Once I woke up, I headed to the pool to read my chapter for class. Our class was outside on the patio by the pool and was more of a discussion than a lecture. We learned our main objectives and assignments for the class today. I am about to leave for dinner now at the same Italian restaurant we ate yesterday, then it's probably back to bed for me since I'm not fully caught up on sleep. Love you all and miss you! I'll post pictures after the Cannes Film Festival which is tomorrow!
Bon Voyage, Hannah. Keep an eye out for Roman ruins for me. I've never been to the south of France and would love to explore. Have you read, "A Year in Provence" by Peter Mayle? It's a hoot.
